It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Billie Chancellor, beloved mother, sister and friend, on July 12, 2015.
Billie was born in Missouri on July 19, 1931 to William and Anna Hale. She grew up as the oldest of four children in the town of Sheldon on the family farm where she helped raise her brother and sisters Larry, Jean and Brenda.
She excelled in school and graduated high school at the age of 16, when she began teaching. Billie graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in education. Upon a trip to Lamar, Missouri, she met Harold “Hal” Chancellor, Jr., and they eventually married.
Following the Korean War, in which Hal was a fighter pilot in the Navy, they moved to California and resided in Pacific Palisades.
Billie was active in the area, helping Hal establish the American Legion Hall in Pacific Palisades and being involved with the local community as it grew. She was an active volunteer with the Santa Monica-Westside Charity League during the 1960s.
Later, she raised her sons Buddy and Rick as a single mother. Billie showed her incredible strength as a person of character and commitment, raising two boys by herself and working tirelessly to do so.
Throughout this time she built a successful escrow business, California Investors Escrow in Marina Del Rey, which she owned for 30 years. She was active in the real estate business having served on the Venice-Marina Del Rey Board of Realtors.
Billie had a love for tennis and was often at Palisades Park playing on the weekends with friends. She loved her community of Pacific Palisades where she lived from 1958 until her passing. She was a member of Saint Matthew’s Episcopal Church for over 55 years and had a deep affection for Saint Matthew’s, where her ashes will be interned for eternity.
Billie will always be remembered for her character, strength, commitment and caring nature.
A memorial service will be held at The Parish of Saint Matthew at 1031 Bienveneda Avenue in Pacific Palisades on Sunday, August 2, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow.
