A long-contested development project in Pacific Palisades may now continue the battle to build.
The proposed 49-unit apartment complex at 16990-17000 Sunset Blvd. was denied by the West Los Angeles Planning Commission in December last year, but hadn’t received the decision in writing. Seven months later, the developer, M & A Gabaee, LP, had still not received the official letter of determination, which they were supposed to receive within a few days of the decision. Not only is it a written form of the decision, but also that letter is a developer’s ticket to appeal.
At a recent West LA Planning meeting, commissioners confronted a city zoning administrator about why the letter had still not been delivered. A significant reason was not given and the letter was promised within the week.
The project has been the center of controversy for many neighbors since 2014 when the project was initially approved. Among other issues, residents claimed the project would put the area in geological danger, and used the rallying cry “Save the Bluffs.”
The letter has since been distributed and the developer has 20 days from the date the letter was received to appeal the decision.
Whether or not the developer plans to appeal the decision remains unclear. The developer did not respond to requests for comment by print time.
At the same planning meeting, a backyard home pool development was given the green light to continue construction. A complaint had been made against the project claiming it was in violation of the Coastal Act. Commissioners determined the swimming pool was not in violation and allowed the project to continue.
