After winning the kicking job for the New Orleans Saints, Kai Forbath was released Tuesday and will not be on the team’s 53-man roster for Sunday’s NFL season opener against Oakland at the Superdome.
Instead, newly-signed rookie Wil Lutz will do the placekicking for the Saints.
Forbath and Connor Barth competed for the kicking job all summer and the team had seemingly settled on Forbath when Barth was cut and subsequently signed with Chicago.
Forbath grew up in the Highlands and was an All-CIF kicker at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks. He won the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s outstanding kicker as a junior at UCLA.
