The first two weeks of the NFL season have been productive for Tampa Bay Buccaneers strong safety Chris Conte.
The former California Golden Bears and Loyola High star, who grew up playing baseball, football and soccer in the El Medio Bluffs and went to Corpus Christi School, had 11 tackles (seven solo, four assisted) in the team’s season-opening 31-24 victory at Atlanta and added seven solo tackles in Sunday’s 40-7 loss at Arizona.
Tampa Bay hosts the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday.
Conte totaled 79 tackles, six pass deflections, two interceptions and two forced fumbles in 14 games for Tampa Bay last season. He spent the first four years of his career in Chicago after being drafted in April 2011.
After high school, Conte going to UCLA (his mother Anne’s alma mater) but ultimately chose UC Berkeley, where he had initially committed. After three seasons at cornerback he switched to safety under defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast.
