The Palisades High boys lacrosse team suffered a setback against one of its archrivals on Friday, as a valiant comeback attempt fell just short on a foggy, wet evening at Stadium By the Sea. Trailing Loyola 9-4 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Dolphins scored four goals, including the last two in a span of eight seconds, to trim the deficit to one with 3:47 to play. However, their rally was snuffed out when Loyola blocked a pair of shots in the closing seconds to preserve the upset win, 9-8. ‘We showed a ton of heart coming back like that,’ assistant head coach Tommy Johnson said. ‘It’s tough for our seniors to lose their last game at home. But I’m proud of our second-half effort, because we could have caved in and we didn’t.’ The first half was all Loyola, as the Cubs (10-2) scored seven unanswered goals after an early score by junior Blake Bryant to take a 7-1 lead into the break. Palisades responded quickly in the second half, as junior Daniel Gurvis scored two goals in under two minutes, and the teams traded two more goals in the period. Trailing 9-6 in the fourth, senior Daniel Hernandez and Bryant provided the Dolphins with instant offense, scoring at the 3:55 and 3:47 mark, respectively. With the loss, the No. 10-ranked Dolphins fell to 13-2 with two games remaining: they played Tuesday at Crespi and today at Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences. They still hope to get the second or third seed in the postseason Mayor’s Cup, a one-day tournament on April 28 at Huntington Park.
