Chef Johnny Prep joined Marquez Elementary second graders for a cooking demonstration last Thurday morning. The classes had recently harvested broccoli and were eager to discover healthy ways to prepare and enjoy this vegetable.
Prep is an author, entrepreneur, cooking-show host, soup expert and advocate for children’s health. The author of “The Five Star Entertaining Casual Cookbook,” published in 2012, he now hosts “Soup and Co.,” airing in the Detroit metro area.
Currently the national spokesperson for Zoup! Fresh Soup Company, Prep is also the founder of “Veggie Wars,” an innovative middle-school curriculum developed through his Quality for Kids nonprofit. He has a new book coming out in March called “The Magic of Cooking with Really Good Broth.” The book is packed with rich-tasting, healthy recipes that reveal a chef’s best-kept secret—three-fourth broths and stocks, an essential ingredient in a wide variety of America’s most beloved recipes.
Prep has committed a substantial part of his cooking endeavors and instruction to helping the home cook find simple recipes that replicate the flavors one finds in top restaurants. His goal is to provide an accessible path to great food that can be prepared on a more economical basis, he says.
