The Village Green in Pacific Palisades, normally a highly prized oasis of calm in the center of town, has been transformed into a blazing array of colors and fabrics after being “yarnbombed” to celebrate National Women’s History Month.

Trees, benches, lampposts and even a few strategically placed bicycles have been enveloped in crocheted and knitted wool wraps. They have been tagged with the names and stories of powerful women past and present.
These include influential First Ladies Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan, media moguls Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart, suffragette Susan B. Anthony, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, Marie Tallchief, America’s first prima ballerina, and Elizabeth Blackwell, America’s first accredited female doctor.
And Lucille Ball, whose tag quotes the flame-haired performer as saying, “I’m not funny. What I am is brave.”
There is also a tag honoring Rose Gilbert, the beloved Palisades Charter High School teacher whom former pupil and director J.J. Abrams celebrated by transforming into a character called Maz in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
The yarnbombing will last until Monday, March 20, when it will be unstrung, so check it out fast.
As Village Green board member Marge Gold told the Pacific Palisades Community Council on Thursday, March 9, it’s fun.
After the Green show, Palisadian volunteers, including women from the Palisades-Malibu YMCA and students from PaliHi will rework the pieces into blankets for women emerging out of homelessness.
