After the California State Assembly passed the Start the School Day Later bill on July 12, Palisadian students may soon be blessed with a few more precious minutes of sleep.
Backed by the American Psychological Association and the Center for Disease Control, the bill would require that the school day for middle schools and high schools begin no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
With back-to-school season just around the corner, the Palisadian-Post asked five local high school students if a later start time would help make learning easier.

School is already stressful and waking up earlier adds to that stress—especially when we are up late doing homework. When exactly are we supposed to sleep? I think a later start time would be more reasonable.

I think starting later is a good idea, even if it means having to get off from school at a later time. It would just make things a lot easier in the morning.

I absolutely want a later start time. My brain just doesn’t work as well early in the morning.

I say yes because I get a lot of homework that keeps me up at night. It really is a never-ending cycle. An hour would make a huge difference.

I don’t enjoy getting up super early and sometimes I don’t even have time to eat breakfast before rushing out the door. I think a later start time would help increase student performance and release stress. With that being said, a lot of after school extracurriculars—like my art classes—start right after the normal release time, so this would really have to be a citywide ordinance.
