Regaining the Western League title is still its No. 1 priority, but the Palisades High baseball team is also contending for a spot in the City Section’s inaugural Open Division playoffs and the Dolphins took a giant step toward that goal with Saturday’s 9-8 road victory over Marshall in the opening game of the Tiger Classic.
Palisades’ previous trip to Los Feliz came two years before in the wildcard round of the City Division I playoffs when the Dolphins prevailed 1-0 in eight innings.
This time the Dolphins fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but battled back to tie it in the third when catcher Benji Taylor belted a three-run home run.
Palisades regained the lead in the fifth when Lucas Braun hit a two-RBI double and Will Coquillard stole home and the Dolphins widened the gap with three more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Jacob Kalt followed by a two-run single by Taylor.
Earlier in the week Palisades swept University 12-1 and 14-0 to move into first place in league.
