St. Matthew’s Music Guild will continue its 35th season of concerts on Friday, March 13, with a performance by Grammy Award-nominated pianist Petronel Malan.
The concert will include sonatas by Scarlatti and Beethoven, “Paraphrase on Sixteen Waltzes of Brahms” by Dohnányi, and works by African American composer Florence Price and Stephen Heller.
Malan was born in South Africa and began piano lessons with her mother at the age of 4, continuing with Adolph Hallis, Joseph Stanford and Albie van Schalkwyk.
“She debuted with the Johannesburg Symphony at age 10 and subsequently won all major national competitions, before moving to the United States,” St. Matthew’s shared in a statement ahead of the concert. “Petronel completed both her graduate degrees at the University of North Texas.”
Malan’s career was launched after receiving five gold medals at international piano competitions throughout the United States, including the Louise McMahon, Los Angeles Liszt “Budapest Concert” and Hilton Head International Piano Competitions.
“As a gold medalist of several international piano competitions, Petronel continues to enthrall audiences worldwide,” the statement continued. “Lauded by reviewers as an unmistakably creative force in the classical music world, Petronel’s critical acclaim culminated in the nomination of three Grammy Awards, including Best Instrumental Solo Album for her debut disc ‘Transfigured Bach.’”
Malan followed with recordings devoted to Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Brahms.
The concert will take place at 8 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Church, located at 1031 Bienveneda Ave. Tickets are $35.
The next show in the 35th season will feature The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s, with Jens Lindemann on trumpet and Ethan Helm and Owen Broder on saxophone on April 24.
