As the third-string quarterback at USC, Miller Moss probably didn’t expect to get on the field last Saturday in Pullman, Washington. However, starter Kedon Slovis got injured on the Trojans’ first series and back-up Jaxson Dart was forced to sit out one play after his helmet was knocked off midway through the third quarter. In trotted Moss, who handed off to Vavae Malepeai for no gain. Dart returned for the next down and threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Gary Bryant Jr.
USC went on to win 45-14 in the debut of interim coach Donte Williams, who was promoted from cornerbacks coach and defensive pass game coordinator after Clay Helton was fired five days earlier.
Moss, who grew up in the Via Bluffs and went to St. Matthew’s, picked USC over LSU, Alabama and UCLA. Not one to shy away from competition, Moss may see more playing time depending on the status of Slovis and Dart.
Moss transferred to Mater Dei from Alemany in June 2020 but transfer rules prevented him from playing for the Monarchs his senior year and he returned to Alemany. He enrolled at USC in the spring after graduating from high school a semester early and battled fellow freshman Dart for the backup job.
Moss made the 2020 PrepStar Dream Team and Southern California News Group Fab 15 first team.
