Alejandro Gehry’s “Dazzle” will be on display at Gallery 169 in Santa Monica Canyon through January 2023, showcasing a collection of works that explore space, color and movement.
Gehry was born in Santa Monica in 1976 and went on to graduate with a BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998, according to a press release from the gallery. He currently lives and works in Venice, teaching illustration and painting at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts since 2005. He previously taught at Brentwood Art Center.
Through his works, he shared that finds himself pushing against societal boundaries, according to the gallery. He primarily works in oils on a large scale.
“I started this series of works in 2019, and they were completed between 2021 [and] 2022,” Gehry said about “Dazzle.”
He explained “Dazzle” began as a collaborative project with his architect father, which incorporated “decorative” and “abstract” treatments for a 3D model of a building. Additional paintings during this time featured abstracted landscapes, while others were inspired by the “Razzle Dazzle” patterns painted on ships during World War I and the post-war era.
“Over time, I introduced bright and primary colors into the works,” Gehry added.
Gehry’s work has previously been on display at William Turner Gallery in Santa Monica, diving into historic military wardrobe and the representation—or lack thereof—of women in the portrayal of combat history and the role they played during this time period.
The gallery hosted an opening reception for Gehry on Saturday evening, December 10.
“Come … to be dazzled by Alejandro Gehry’s inspiring, colorful paintings,” the gallery shared to Instagram on Friday, December 9.
The exhibition will run through January 2023.
