A live performance by the revolutionary hip-hop artist Anderson .Paak took Pacific Palisades by surprise on Friday, June 8, in Temescal Gateway Park.
As part of the Run for the Ocean campaign put on by adidas and Parley for the Oceans, local runners took on a 5K run through the canyon. The participants were given free snacks from local food trucks, a reusable water canteen, and were treated to the rhythmic entertainment of Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals.
.Paak is an Oxnard native who is quickly rising through the music charts for his unmistakable sounds of funk and hip-hop fusion. He is most known for singing and rapping while playing the drums at the same time.
The event was the first of 12 major running events across six cities in the world. Adidas will be contributing $1 to the Parley Ocean Plastic program for every kilometer logged by participants.
Booths throughout the park were also setup to show visitors how to be environmentally conscious when recycling their waste.
“We are hosting Run for the Oceans with adidas to step out of our routine, to take a deep breath and to reflect on how important the sea is for every one of us,” said Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley for the Oceans, in a press release. “And to show that millions of little steps can make a huge difference for our movement.”
As hundreds of youthful runners and thousands of concertgoers from all over LA flooded the park, the 9 p.m. concert also raised concerns with nearby residents who were not jamming along with the drummer. But the concert proved to be a success and brought rare life to the Palisades after 7 p.m.
The event offered a glimpse of a new Palisades that is increasingly becoming a Westside hotspot for the youth of LA as an incoming Caruso project promises new possibilities.
