Palisadian Joanne Cullen, a longtime member of the Pacific Palisades Art Association, won first place in the painting on canvas category of the Association’s juried show at the Palisades Branch Library.
“I was drawn to Joanne Cullen’s ‘A Nice Day’ for its delicate and sophisticated color scheme and evocative juxtaposition of abstract and representational elements,” juror and artist Marc Kompaneyets said. “The overall effect, which perhaps is consciously disjointed, gives the impression of a longing for long-faded memories.”
Cullen was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is a very young over-90 painter. She studied art at the Art Student’s League in New York City and worked as a draftsperson during World War II. She moved to California, where she married and had two children. She also worked in fashion illustration and art therapy. She has been a winner many times over many years.
Glass artist Terry Bromberg won for her beautiful bird-themed glass pieces, and Wanda Normal-Storey’s solidly composed and delicately executed watercolor of “Old Topanga Ranch Motel” won a first prize. Other winners were Martha Meade, Marylin Hamilton, Joey Barnes and Ruth Dewar.
