How does an art museum actually research its collection for lost, stolen, or smuggled masterpieces? Victoria Reed, Monica S. Sadler Assistant Curator for Provenance at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, discusses her experiences as an “art detective” at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Getty Center.
This lecture complements the exhibition “Untold Stories: Collecting and Transforming Medieval Manuscripts,” on view through May 12.
Reed traces the provenance, or ownership history, of the MFA’s collection and looks for potential seizures, thefts and losses during the Nazi era (1933-45) and beyond. The lecture is a behind-the-scenes look at provenance research and offers a consideration of art-museum policy and practice today.
The lecture is free, but reservations are recommended at (310) 440-7300 or getty.edu.
