Who would steal a local artist’s paintings from the neighborhood library? That’s the question on Palisadians’ minds after eight paintings went missing from an art exhibit.
Longtime Palisadian artist Rose Carcich’s paintings were nabbed from the Palisades Branch Library Community Room sometime between Thursday, Dec. 17 and Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015.
Carcich had 52 paintings, in a variety of styles from realism to abstract, on exhibit from Dec. 5- 29 for her Artist Solo Show. A public reception was held on Saturday, Dec. 5.
“I invested countless weeks and hours of time and energy to finish and prepare for the show,” Carcich told the Post in an interview after the eight paintings were reported missing.
“It is a labor of love and has sentimental value to me. Needless to say, this has upset me immensely,” the artist said.
Carcich said that on Thursday, Dec. 17, a friend first noticed her “California Poppies” painting was missing. Then, on Wednesday, Dec. 23, Carcich herself discovered a total of eight paintings missing.
“The chains were hanging empty with the labels all over the counter area. I informed Mary Hopf, Senior Librarian, and we both counted 44 paintings that were left. The Library Community Room was dimly lit and there literally is no security at the library whatsoever,” Carcich said.“We’re really sad that this happened,” Hopf told the Post. “Nothing like this has ever happened before.”
Carcich said seven of the missing paintings measure approximately 10X12” to 16X12” (unframed), with the other measuring approximately 18X9”.
“At the present, I have not heard from the police or the library, and there has not been any compensation for the missing paintings,” Carcich said.
