February 1 was national signing day and eight Palisades High School athletes inked their letters of intent at a ceremony in the gym while classmates and family members watched.
The signees were baseball players Mason Edwards (USC), Amari Yolas (CSUN) and Wesley Wells (Claremont-McKenna); wrestler Ryan Woods (Washington & Lee); tennis player Jex Frankel (Wesleyan), rower Rachel Lande (UCLA) and basketball players Elise and Taylor Arnold (Emerson).
Edwards was the ace left-hander of the Dolphins’ pitching staff last spring, posting a 6-4 record with 102 strikeouts and a 1.02 earned run average in 12 appearances. Wells was a right-handed pitcher and shortstop in 2022, batting .340 with 17 hits, five RBIs, 15 runs scored, four doubles, seven stolen bases and an .897 fielding percentage in 21 games.
Yolas did not play baseball last spring but in the fall he made All-City and earned team MVP honors as a receiver, defensive back and kick returner while leading the Pali High football team to the Division I final.
He will join Pali High alum Lucas Braun at Cal State Northridge.
Woods is sitting out his senior season with a torn meniscus but he won the City 105-pound title as a feshman and the 132-pound title as a junior. He is excited to attend Washington & Lee, a Division III program in Lexington, Virginia.
Frankel plays No. 1 singles on the Dolphins’ varsity tennis team and he reached the finals of the City Individual tournament last spring after helping the Dolphins win their 13th team title in a row.
Lande is taking her talents up the road to Westwood after representing Team USA at the World Rowing U19 Championships in Italy last summer and taking ninth in Women’s Pair with Marina Aquatic Center teammate Shannon Kearney, with whom she won the National Trials.
The Arnold twins hope to finish their Pali High careers with a third City title. The senior forwards pace the squad in points and rebounds.
