Years of hard work paid off on Monday for Lucas Braun, who was picked in the sixth round (189th overall) of the Major League Baseball draft by the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
A 2019 Palisades High graduate, Braun used his right arm to power the Dolphins to backto-back shutout victories in the the City Section Open Division playoffs and a spot in the finals at Dodger Stadium as team captain his senior year, posting a 0.85 earned run average and 116 strikeouts while earning City Co-Pitcher of the Year honors. He made 13 appearances in two seasons at the University of San Diego before transferring to Cal State Northridge, where he was named to the All-Big West Second Team two years in a row.
The 6-foot, 185-pounder posted a 6-5 record on the mound as a senior in 2023, throwing 91.1 innings with a 4.83 earned run average and 30 walks in 15 starts and became the first Matador since 2016 to record 100 strikeouts in a season.
Braun received his Economics degree in the spring. He played club baseball with the Chicago Cubs’ scout team in 2018.
