Barbara and Andrew Martin, married 55 years, passed away peacefully at their home in Pacific Palisades after each battling cancer. Barbara, 85, passed away on July 7 and Andrew, 83, passed away on September 22.
Both from British origins, they met in Calgary, Canada when Barbara was a registered nurse caring for her patient, Andrew. They married in Calgary and spent 10 years there while raising two daughters, Andrew embarking on his long and very successful career in Corporate Finance.
A career transfer for Andrew brought them to Los Angeles in 1972 and Barbara and Andrew settled in Pacific Palisades which they happily called “home” thereafter (aside from the family’s two year adventure in Cairo, Egypt!).
Barbara was an avid tennis player and Andrew a runner for many decades, and he later also became a dedicated golfer. They greatly enjoyed the company of lifelong friends through varied social gatherings, groups and events.
Barbara and Andrew were actively involved in Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church for more than 30 years. In addition, Barbara was passionate about her charity work with Las Doradas and Andrew was proud of his involvement with the neighborhood Homeowners Association.
They are survived by their daughters Fiona Hellwarth and Sally Martin; son-in-law Tom Hellwarth; and four grandchildren who loved them very much: Grace and Evan Hellwarth, and Jennifer and Max VonSeggern. Barbara also leaves behind three siblings.
They were cherished members of the Palisades community and will be greatly missed by all who knew them.
A Memorial will be held for Barbara and Andrew at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Palisades Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to Las Doradas or to Smile Train in Barbara and Andrew’s memory are welcomed.
