She may only be a sophomore, but Briana Vasquez is as competitive as they come in th circle and she has been a workhorse for the Palisades High softball team.
Vasquez has pitched 40 of the Dolphins’ 56 innings this season, posting a 4-3 record, one complete game, a 3.85 earned run average, 36 strikeouts and only five walks issued. She throws strikes, forces batters to put the ball in play and relies on her defense, just the way head coach Manny Flores likes it.
“Briana’s been terrific and keeps us in every game,” Flores said. “She hasn’t gotten any run support in a couple of games or else her record would be better.”
A case in point is last Tuesday’s league game versus Fairfax when Vasquez tossed a three-hitter in a 3-0 loss at Stadium by the Sea. That came five days after she allowed only four hits in a 5-0 loss to Venice.
Vasquez, who also play first base, is also a steady contributor at the plate. She is batting .400 with 10 hits (tied for third-most on the team), seven RBIs and 11 runs (second-most on the team) in 25 at-bats.
