Grammy Award-winning composer Christopher Tin has been selected for the 2011-12 Music Guild/L.A. County Arts Commission’s new music project at St. Matthew’s. The composition will receive its world premiere at the June 2012 concert and feature not only vocals, but also members of the Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s and a percussion section to include indigenous South African instruments. St. Matthew’s will open its new season of concerts on October 14 with a program featuring violinist Lindsay Deutsch and the Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Thomas Neenan, playing the music of Mendelssohn, Mozart, Copland and Gershwin. Tin will compose a work exploring the intersection of African and Western musical influences. One of the tracks, ‘Baba Yetu,’ from his Grammy Award-winning album, ‘Calling All Dawns,’ blends choral music in the Western tradition with African rhythms, melodic patterns and texts. The composer studied music composition, conducting and English literature at Stanford and Oxford universities as an undergrad. After winning a Fulbright Scholarship, he earned his master’s degree in music at the Royal College of Music in London’the alma mater of many of the giants of British composition, including Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. Tin has won awards for his video-game music and contributed to scores for Hollywood blockbusters (‘X2: X-Men United’), independent features, documentaries and television specials. The 2011-12 season will also include pianist Andrew von Oeyen in recital, the Chatham Baroque in a bonus concert for subscribers, and additional concerts by the Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s.
