Eight candidates standing for the four-seat Pacific Palisades Community Council executive—the body that shapes the agenda for the town and its relationship with the city and the state—will put themselves through a rough-edged “beauty contest” on Thursday, June 14.
After weeks of surprisingly heated campaigning, with personality and ideological clashes surfacing both in email chains and public outbursts, it will conclude with a secret vote by up to 23 area and community representatives.
At the PPCC meeting starting in the Palisades Branch Library at 7 p.m., to be moderated by former PPCC legal counsel Ron Dean, the candidates will have two minutes to woo voters to their cause, followed by questions submitted by voters.
More than one PPCC member said they will not hold back. Some will ask whether one group known as the old guard seeking re-election is actually less change-resistant than others seeking election for the first time. Others, upset by the hostile tone occasionally displayed during this election, feel most urgently it’s time for fresh faces and expertise.
This internal vote is a curtain-raiser for the public vote on nine PPCC area representatives, due to be held in late summer. In the past candidates have been voted in or “acclaimed” with as few as 18 votes, and PPCC members are hoping that more Palisadians will turn out to vote this time.
Palisadians can influence the executive vote by speaking to their area or organizational rep who can vote on their behalf.
