The Palisades High football team takes on Granada Hills in a nonleague game Friday night at Stadium by the Sea and whichever school prevails will get more than just a “W” on its record, it also gets the Charter Bowl trophy.
Since the grudge game started in 2006 both schools have won four times. The Highlanders won three of the first four meetings and the Dolphins have won three of the last four, including last season’s 24-7 victory. They want to make sure the coveted trophy stays where it is another year.
“These games are fun to play in and it’s a cool thing that we’ve created with Granada,” Pali High Coach Tim Hyde said. “Their program has a lot of history. We’re looking forward to the game. It’s another chance for us to compete and to get better. Their defense comes after you and we’ll have to be ready for their pressure.”
Granada Hills (1-3) is trying to build off the momentum of last week’s 27-14 road win against neighborhood rival Kennedy. The Highlanders have lost to Palisades’ last opponent (Canoga Park) and its next opponent (Harvard-Westlake). Food trucks and pre-game festivities will highlight Pali High’s annual Football Fest, starting with the junior varsity game at 4 p.m. and carrying over to the varsity game at 7.
The Dolphins (2-1) needed Ethan Erickson‘s 21-yard field goal with three seconds left to beat Canoga Park and are trying for their 10th win since Hyde took over the program last fall. Below are the results of the previous eight Charter Bowl games:
