She has only been diving for about two months, but Dempsey Foxson is heading to the state finals after surprising her fellow competitors, her coach and herself by placing second in the City Section Finals last Thursday at Maggie Gilbert Aquatic Center.
“I have a background in dance and gymnastics and my mom was a diver so I’m sure all of that helps,” said the Palisades High freshman, whose parents Paul and Stacey run Sports Mania Camp at Paul Revere and whose brother Tate plays on the Dolphins’ varsity baseball team. “I scored highest on my first dive, an inward one-and-a-half tuck.”
Foxson accumulated 345.35 points in 11 dives off the 1-meter board. Jocelyn Gloria of Cleveland won with a score of 381. In third place for the second year in a row was Pali High junior Catherine Hart with 340.5 points and fourth and fifth respectively were sophomore teammates Noelle Tobin (267.65) and Sophia Bleau (264.45). “This year I was doing harder dives,” Hart said. “I like the vibe of the team this year—last year it was just me and Maya (Salvitti), but we have a few more girls now.”
