“Small Creatures Such As We,” a solo exhibition of small- and large-scale photographs by British-Swiss multidisciplinary conceptual artist Richelle Rich, has opened at Gallery 169 in Canyon Square.
The exhibition marks Rich’s Los Angeles debut, on view now through November 5.
Her work captures objects, ephemera and artifacts that she has collected, examining them through a camera lens and creating new narratives, according to the gallery.
“The photographs of poisonous flowers, stolen knives, glass recovered from ancient shipwrecks, custom-made objects, mannequins and other objects I have collected are presented in the style of a cabinet of curiosities, infused with personal, cultural and political subtext,” Rich said in a statement. “I am fascinated by the ways in which these everyday objects are magically contaminated by our stories, emotions and memories.”
The title, “Small Creatures Such As We,” was derived from a quote by Ann Druyan, that was “widely misattributed to her husband Carl Sagan in the book they co-authored,” according to Gallery 169. It became the title of the daughter, Sasha Sagan’s, book.
“She had studied the universe all her life,” Rich explained, “but had overlooked its clearest message: For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.”
The exhibition kicked off with an opening reception on September 23, with an evening that featured La Morra pizza.
