Happy Trails for Kids will host its sixth annual Taste of Camp on Thursday, October 5, and tickets are on sale now.
Happy Trails for Kids was established by Palisadian Pepper Edmiston to give recreational opportunities to children who have physical or mental disabilities or serious illness. The nonprofit organization was originally inspired by Edmiston’s son, David, according to the Happy Trails for Kids website, who was left with intellectual disabilities and epileptic as the result of chemotherapy treatment as a child.
“When it was time for sleepaway camp, because of David’s illness, no camp would have him,” according to the website. “So, in 1982, his mom, Pepper Edmiston, started one … Happy Trails celebrated children with challenges and the families who loved them. All of David’s siblings came to camp: his brothers Jon, Matt, Ben, Will and Charlie, and his sister Susan.”
Since 2009, Happy Trails for Kids has been dedicated to bringing camping, connections and confidence into the lives of children in foster care—and funds raised through this year’s Taste of Camp event will directly support Happy Trails for Kids.
“Taste of Camp is an opportunity to support our mission to enrich the lives of children experiencing foster care by offering cost-free camp programs and year-round reunion events that highlight the importance of happiness, friendship, new skills and role models,” according to an announcement.
This year’s Taste of Camp will offer food, cocktails, wine, beer and entertainment. The event will take place at Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
