Following an intense competition throughout camp, Kai Forbath will be the placekicker for the New Orleans Saints in their season opener Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.
Forbath, who was raised in the Highlands and played his prep career at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, beat out Connor Barth for the starting spot. On Saturday, Barth was cut by the Saints and on Monday he signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears.
Forbath, the Lou Groza Award winner his junior year at UCLA, was the Saints’ kicker for the last nine games last season after being cut by the Washington Redskins one week into the season. Forbath was 9-for-13 on field goals and 32-for-33 on extra points with New Orleans in 2015.
