On Monday, Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden confirmed the team released placekicker Kai Forbath in order to sign free-agent kickoff specialist Dustin Hopkins.
Forbath grew up in the Highlands, led Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High to three CIF titles and enjoyed a stellar collegiate career at UCLA, where he won the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker.
Forbath made a 45-yard field goal and missed a 46-yard attempt in Sunday’s 17-10 season-opening loss to Miami. He converted 60 of his 69 field goal tries in four NFL seasons with Washington.
Entering Sunday’s game, his success percentage of .881 ranked first in franchise history for kickers with 50 attempts or more. “Just want to thank the Redskins for the last three years,” Forbath tweeted Monday. “I’m going to miss the amazing Redskins nation and all the support!”
