People are not taught to be activists. Powerful and raw drive for change cannot be artificially ingrained into one’s mind. Instead, fueled by a prominent obligation to speak publically on an issue, people choose to rise up—past barriers of discouragement—in hopes of sparking reforms.
In the midst of a world so easily divided, I am extremely grateful for my generation: a generation of activists, self-educators and humanitarians. Collectively, and despite which issue is being supported, we are unafraid to use our voices.
The passion that is apparent in every conversational debate between friends, in every ballot cast, in every poster made and in every speech delivered, is the very principle that unites us as a people.
While beliefs inevitably vary—sometimes drastically—we should no longer consider that to be a flaw or a disadvantage in our unification. Rather, as a rising generation, we must utilize this difference to our benefit.
Contrasting opinions are necessary to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to become fully educated, especially on an opposing viewpoint; therefore, replacing discriminatory disagreement with a sense of a better understanding. Positive progression in every aspect of society—whether it be political, social or economic—cannot be justly achieved without mutual respect.
I believe the next generation can fully influence the future, but we have to ask ourselves now how we want the following years to unfold. I am certain that if we use our evident passion regarding international current events as a link between relationships rather than a breach, the disconnect that has formed between us will be restored.
In order for our calls for change to be taken seriously, we have to persevere as a community. Instead of accepting the division of people against one another, we must communicate; therefore, collaborating as one integrated organization.
My optimism stems from the fact that we have already begun initiating real change. Through outlets like social media and peaceful protests, our voices are becoming an art form, true representatives of our solidarity.
It is clear to me that I am growing up among a new generation. One that is outspoken, opinionated and intellectual. A generation that will be impossible to ignore.
We will no longer be opponents, forcing differing views onto others, but rather, allies with a common interest: the equal wellbeing of all people.
