Experiencing a film by British director Edgar Wright is exactly that, an experience. There are frenzied emotions, laugh-out-loud winners, horrific visuals, and sometimes, plentiful doses of blood and guts. It’s a rollercoaster ride not for the faint of heart.
However, scenes that display real tenderness and sensitivity punctuate the ride—and that’s the reason to keep showing up. Among all the brilliant Wright films that Street Food Cinema could have picked for its evening screening on Oct. 20—“Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” (my personal favorite) “Baby Driver,” “The World’s End,” etc.—“Shaun of the Dead” is the most appropriate.
Released in 2004, the film saw Wright transition from being a television writer to a major film director in ridiculous demand for wacky projects.
And for those who weren’t yet aware of comedic wonder Simon Pegg, who is perfectly cast as a down-on-his-luck guy who decides to turn his life around at the same time as a zombie-themed community crisis strikes, it put him on the international map of versatile actors.
The enigmatic Dylan Moran appears in a small role, displaying the subtle expression that has become his signature over the years. (I’m sure there is a reason why he didn’t skyrocket to fame after “Notting Hill,” but his trajectory remains a mystery.)
Horror films and comedies don’t usually receive attention during awards season, much less horror-comedies, though “Shaun of the Dead” was nominated for the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film at the 2005 BAFTAs. The film has gone on to enjoy a rich life of continued viewing from loyal horror-comedy fans, newcomers and even the odd skeptic.
Actor Justin Rupple will host Saturday’s screening event, with accompanying music from Jason Heath & the Greedy Souls. As always, gourmet food trucks will be on hand to serve burgers, lobster, bakery goods and more.
Doors open at 6 p.m., live music at 6:30 p.m., movie at 8 p.m. Visit streetfoodcinema.com for ticketing information.
