Race Cars
On a recent Sunday around 7:45 a.m.—yes, a.m.—while driving down Sunset Boulevard near Swarthmore, a caravan of race cars flew by me at such a clip, had I blinked, I would have missed the circuit.
A moment later, stopped at a red light, I spotted another group of race cars swarming on my tail and thought, there must be a way to slow these knuckleheads down and quiet them, too.
When the traffic light turned green, I noticed an elderly man driving an SUV in the lane beside me. I clocked him at about 30 miles per hour.
That’s when it hit me—all I had to do was maintain the same speed as the driver in the left lane and, tada, the race cars would be stuck behind us, forced to drive the speed that we set—which was slightly under the posted 35 mph.
This pace car method worked all the way from the Palisades Village to Brentwood—quietly and safely.
