
Margaret Davenport Wells, the matriarch of her family, passed away on July 9 at the age of 93, in Durango, Colorado. Born April 6, 1918 in Lubbock, Texas to Blanche and Dee Davenport, and Margaret grew up in Santa Monica with her sister, Betty. After graduating from Santa Monica High in 1936, she studied fashion design at Chouinard Art Institute. Margaret married Charles Manley Wells in 1939 at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Santa Monica. The couple raised four daughters, Debra Ann, Pamela Susan, Margaret Dee and Elizabeth Jane, and lived in Pacific Palisades until Charles’ death in 1976. Two years later, Margaret moved to McAllen, Texas to assume management of the family business. Beginning in 1983, she spent her summers and holidays in Pagosa Springs, Colorado surrounded by family. Over the years, it became a beloved second home. Margaret married Bohn Featherstone in September 1995. They were happily married for six years. In McAllen, Margaret was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and was involved in the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Cancer Foundation, the International Museum of Art & Science, the South Texas Symphony and the Museum of South Texas History. She is survived by her four daughters and four sons-in-law (Don Ross, Jeff Peters, Marsh Bull and Bill Doyle); 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Jane Wells Long; and faithful friend and business associate, Carol Edrington.
