In only her second race of the NCAA cross country season, California sophomore Marissa Williams placed 16th in the Women’s Blue Division 5K on Friday at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
Williams ran the 3.1 miles in 16:44.7 as the Golden Bears finished ninth out of 23 teams with 119 points. Bethan Knights was Cal’s top placer, finishing third in 16:21.8.
Williams had a stellar freshman campaign in cross country and track at Berkeley, earning All-Conference cross country honors in the fall and winning the 5,000 meters in a personal-best 16:19.35 at the Payton Jordan Invite in the spring.
A 2015 Palisades High graduate, Williams won the Post Cup Award as the Dolphins’ outstanding senior athlete. She was a three-time City Section individual cross country champion and four-time City champion in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. As a junior, she became the first female in City history to sweep the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 races at City finals.
