Coach Aldo Juliano has named two captains for this year’s Westside Mat Monsters team: James Van Wagenen and Jason Lema.
“Both are exceptional wrestlers who have now taken their skills to work with our non-profit wrestling club,” said Juliano, a former head coach at Palisades Charter High School. “Both have already logged in summer tournament wins leading their teammates forward to getting better in the offseason.”
Lema graduated from Pali High in June and might attend Cerritos College to continue wrestling while Wagenen will begin his senior year at Pali High in the fall, bidding to make it back to the CIF state meet.
Lena placed sixth in the 120-pound weight division at the City Section Championships in February. Van Wagenen got second place in the 113-pound class after winning the 106-pound division as a sophomore in 2022.
Mat Monsters offers classes five to six days per week, and wrestlers of all levels ages 7 and up are welcome, including college and adult wrestlers.
