CERT Training | Pacific Palisades
Sign-ups for the next seven-week CERT training course in Pacific Palisades are now open.
“The Los Angeles Fire Department’s CERT Program (free of charge) was developed because of the need for a well-trained civilian emergency work force,” according to a program overview. “The CERT Program provides for community self-sufficiency through the development of multifunctional response teams who act as an adjunct to the city’s emergency services during major disasters.”
The Community Emergency Response Team course begins on September 7 and meets once per week from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Calvary Christian Church. It will be led by LAFD Firefighters Andrew Huang and Kenneth Fraser. Topics include “Introduction, Disaster Awareness,” “ICS and Disaster Psychology,” and “Disaster Medical Operations 1 and 2.”
The group needs at least 25 attendees. Attendees must go to all classes to receive a “certificate of completion.” Missed classes can be made up.

Upcoming events | Palisades Branch Library
Palisades Branch Library will host a meeting of the Mysterious Book Club on Tuesday, August 15, and Painting Class on Saturday, August 19.
The monthly Mysterious Book Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. on August 15 to discuss “The Long Goodbye” by Raymond Chandler.
“In this classic LA ‘noir’ mystery, Philip Marlowe befriends a down-on-his-luck war veteran with the scars to prove it,” according to a synopsis provided by Palisades Branch Library. “Then he finds out that the veteran has a very wealthy nymphomaniac wife, whom he divorced and remarried and ends up dead. And now the veteran is on the lam, and the cops and a gangster are after Marlowe.”
Longtime Palisadian and member of Pacific Palisades Art Association Martha Meade will lead a Painting Class on August 19 beginning at 2 p.m. Attendees will paint with acrylics on canvas, “producing a masterpiece each of you can take home and hang on your wall.”
“Space is limited, and we are trying to expand access to this class by prioritizing those who have not taken any prior classes,” according to Palisades Branch Library. “We will have two lists, so if you’ve taken the class before, sign up to be on that list, and if you’ve never taken it, welcome and please sign up.”
Sign up by stopping by the library or emailing palsds@lapl.org.
