Summer Writing Contest Updates | Palisades Branch Library
The Friends of the Palisades Library Summer Creative Writing Contest deadline is approaching Tuesday, September 5.
The contest, which has the theme “The Best Day,” is open to students in grades one through 12 who live or attend school in the city of Los Angeles. Prizes, to be awarded in first, second and third place, include gift certificates to Diesel, A Bookstore.
Awards will be given out on Thursday, October 12, in the Community Room at Palisades Branch Library. The event is scheduled to kick off with a performance of the teen award-winning stories (grades seven through 12) by actors Bill Jones and Christine Kludjian from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
“Come meet the library Teen Council, and enjoy snacks and drinks during the event,” according to a press release.
The children’s “dinner theater” event (grades one through six) is scheduled to begin with a pizza dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by the winning story performances at 6 p.m.
Participants, family, friends and the community are welcome to attend both events.

Ice Cream Social | Pacific Palisades
Santa Monica Chorus will host an “old-fashioned” Ice Cream Social on Sunday, August 27, at Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church from 3 to 5 p.m.
The event will feature four-part a capella singing by “the reigning champions of Sweet Adelines Region 11,” including Troubadour, PDQ and Summersault quartets, as well as Good Vibes Only double quartet. Attendees are also invited to enjoy ice cream, win raffle prizes, and shop a jewelry and scarf sale.
“Join us for an afternoon of harmony and ice cream at the Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church,” read the Eventbrite page. “The Santa Monica Chorus will be serenading you with their new repertoire while you enjoy raffle prizes, jewelry and scarf shopping, and, of course, ice cream. It’s fun for the whole family.”
Tickets are $25, children ages 5 and under can attend for free. Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church is located at 15821 Sunset Boulevard.

‘Music, Fun and Surprises’ | Pacific Palisades
Westside Voices will present “Gershwin, Berlin, Mancini and Mercer”—an hour of music, fun and surprises—on Sunday, August 27, at Corpus Christi Church at 3 p.m.
“Come hear this award-winning a capella group and enjoy the music of these great composers,” according to the event flyer. “Count your blessings that love is here to stay, and dream of the Pink Panther.”
Corpus Christi Church is located at 880 Toyopa Drive. A donation of $15 is suggested to attend.
“Westside Voices began in 2006, bringing together a diverse group of professional and top amateur singers, to perform a wide variety of music,” according to the group’s website. “Where else will you find a classical soprano soloist, a choral director, a musical comedy performer, a lounge singer, liturgical musicians, a recording artist, two members of the ’60s doo-wop group, The Safaris, and even a contestant on ‘The Gong Show?’”

Visionary Women Sunset Dinner | Malibu
Los Angeles-based nonprofit Visionary Women will host a sunset dinner experience on Malibu Pier with Outstanding in the Field on Sunday, September 10.
“The extraordinary culinary experience will pair a multi-course meal with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, and offer an incredible night celebrating the origins of food and the land, among a group of powerhouse women across various professional fields,” according to a press release.
The culinary experience—with a dinner prepared by female executive chef Bricia Lopez—will take place from 5 to 8 p.m., and is open to both Visionary Women members and the public.
A portion of ticket proceeds will benefit Women’s Earth Alliance, a nonprofit that supports women leaders working to diminish the effects of climate change and protect their communities. Additional proceeds will benefit Visionary Women’s mission in support of elevating women and girls.
