Holistic practitioner, aesthetician and Palisadian Amy Rae is compelled to provide high-end, organic facial treatments for her clients based on a practical realization. “Our skin is our largest organ, so we shouldn’t smother it in chemicals,” she cheerfully told the Palisadian-Post during a visit to her local practice.
The space is about 400 square feet, a far cry from her previous 2,200-square-foot operation in Beverly Hills. But Rae prefers it. She employs fellow aestheticians Kelly Reynolds and Heather Kelle, hosts one client at a time, and they arrive by appointment only. No fuss.
“If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your largest organ,” she added to the conversation about our essential care. Rae learned how to perform corrective skin care from Dr. Thomas Su in Florida. After mastering the medical aspect, she took a nutrition course from Penn Foster College and became aware that an essential aspect to skin care is diet.
“Good fats and clean water are the basic needs,” Rae said, hovering over a vanilla-flavored vitamin D supplement packed with omega fatty acids.
Her corrective skin services target problematic conditions like acne, rosacea, pigmentation and melasma. Some procedures incorporate topical treatments and LED light therapies to stimulate cell turnover in the skin.
In January, Rae’s Signature Facial was included in the “Top 8 Picks for Natural Facials in LA Right Now” by The Chalkboard. Rae also offers a Gentleman’s Facial, and it’s quite popular. “Men get folliculitis because of facial hair, so we created a facial specifically for their skin,” Rae explained.
Rae’s clients range in age from 10 to 70—which you might find surprising, until she clarifies that many parents these days are teaching their children about proper skin care.
Rae has four daughters, three of who ask her to bring back products from work.
The oldest attends Santa Monica College, then there’s a teenager at Palisades Charter High School, tween at Marquez Charter Elementary School and the last is four months old.
Understandably, she hasn’t committed to a personal skin care routine yet. (And these days, there are so many of those that it can seem overwhelming.)
To keep things easy, Rae emphasized looking after one’s general health at home: That means eating and sleeping well. She exfoliates her face every day and consumes some sort of juice (whether homemade or store bought). There are nutritional supplements and natural organic oils that sometimes enter into the mix.
And suddenly, skin care doesn’t seem so baffling. Actually rather fun, especially if you enjoy a good pampering.
