The musical sounds echoing out of the canyon the nights of a Palisades High home football game have changed from last year: they’re stronger, more vibrant. Pure brass, perfectly tuned, strong percussion, flutes, clarinets and a lone piccolo echo above the shouts and referee whistles. “Three years ago the band barely had enough kids to form a P,” junior Divya Subrahmanyam said. “This year we have enough kids to make formations.” The school’s marching band has grown from a pep band that played at football games to full-fledged marching band. At halftime during a recent game between Venice and PaliHi, the bands from both schools took the field. The difference in sound left no doubt to which had the superior sound: unlike the football game, Palisades won hands down. In late September 2002, sophomore Ivaylo Getov, a drum major, was trying to get a marching band started. His honors biology teacher Brendhen Van Loo (who also teaches Advanced Placement biology) saw his student working with the band and they struck up a conversation. Ivaylo learned that Van Loo had been in marching band in high school in Greeley, Colorado, playing the alto saxophone. His school had a strong music program and the marching band placed high in state competition during his senior year. Van Loo also played in the USC marching band, “which is one of the best bands in the nation,” he said in a recent interview. “It was one of the highlights of college for me.” Ivaylo asked for Van Loo’s help. He taught them marching steps and turns. “Our goal three years ago was to march during the halftime at homecoming,” Van Loo said. Which they did, with their short, two-song show. Band membership increased to about 40 the following year, and last year the Booster Club bought new uniforms, new music and three new drums. The band marched at all the games and performed a nearly 12-minute halftime show. This year the band has grown to about 50 members. “Since many of the musicians already have experience, we can do more in a shorter amount of time,” Van Loo said. “They are like a college marching band because they learn new formations every week.” Palisades High approved special funding for the band, which enabled it to buy 17 new songs, three new snare drums, two new bass drums and a new pair of quads. The school also funded new uniforms for the drum majors and a new conducting platform. Will they try marching in the town’s Fourth of July parade? “It would be great to see them do this,” Van Loo said, “but it would require a teacher or someone else to be in town for the Fourth.” He does think the group has the commitment to march. “Most are highly motivated students.” “It’s still a thrill to get out there and see them perform, to help design the shows, and see the final product,” Van Loo said. “Working with the band is relaxing. It takes away the stress of teaching.” At last Friday’s homecoming game against Hamilton, the band performed a 12-minute show with four songs at halftime. There’s a final home game November 10 against Westchester, and the band will be entering a competition on December 10. (Additional reporting provided by Palisadian-Post intern Divya Subrahmanyam)
Struggling Dolphins Lose Homecoming to Hamilton
The Hamilton Yankees spoiled Palisades High’s homecoming last Friday night by defeating the Dolphins, 25-3, at the Stadium by the Sea. Pali’s side of the stadium was filled with fans, but they didn’t have a lot to cheer about. Hamilton (5-3, 2-1) scored on their first possession, after returning the kick-off from their own 25 to their 48. A 25-yard pass from quarterback Noah Paul to Jercell Frost put them on the 27 and they scored six plays later. The conversion failed. Palisades (3-5, 0-3) barely had possession before a fumble was recovered near midfield by Hamilton. The Yankees used a combination of passing and runs down to the 8, where they had to settle for a field goal. After forcing Palisades to punt, Hamilton again marched downfield, only to fumble at the 6-yard line. The ball rolled into the end zone and the Dolphins were able to take possession on the 20. Palisades quarterback Raymond Elie, who was third overall in the Western League for passing, was again unable to generate any offense. Hamilton defenders Gary Peters, Jevoni Buchanan and Travon Morgan practically hurdled over Pali’s offense line, and Elie found himself scrambling. Luckily for Pali, the kid has wheels for legs or the score may have been even more lopsided. In the shotgun position, Elie was sometimes pushed back as much as 20 yards. He dodged and outran two and three Yankees, usually making it back to the line of scrimmage before being taken out. With just over four minutes remaining in the half, Hamilton scored their second touchdown, driving 45 yards in six plays. Pali had to punt again and Hamilton responded with another field goal. Thanks to two 15-yard penalties against Hamilton, Palisades finally moved downfield, before stalling at Hamilton’s 25. The half ended with Hamilton leading, 18-0. After a scoreless third quarter, the Yankees fumbled on their 4-yard line and Palisades took possession. Yet the Dolphins were unable to push the ball through for the touchdown, and senior Estaban Moreno kicked a short field goal. With under two minutes remaining, Hamilton scored a final touchdown. “We just aren’t playing well as I’d like to see at this point in the season,” head coach Leo Castro said. “The inexperience of our athletes is showing. We have 18 juniors and 12 seniors.” o o o The Palisades JV’s won their game, 28-12, with good blocking that allowed the offensive players to move the ball. Pali’s defense made it hard for Hamilton to get anything going until late in the fourth quarter when the Dolphins had a comfortable 28-0 lead. In the second half, the Pali coaches started substituting so that every player had a chance for some field action. “Our execution was excellent,” head coach Calvin Parker said. “We came to play today, and they did it. We started subbing players to see what they had.”
Pali Volleyball Open Playoffs Tonight

In their final regular match of the season, the Palisades High girls volleyball team suffered a frustrating loss to Venice on the Gondoliers’ court last Thursday. The Dolphins won the first game 25-19, lost the second 22-25, won the third 28-26, and lost the fourth 25-21, which sent the teams to a decisive fifth game. Venice won 15-10, to complete a 10-0 league season. The Dolphins finished second with an 8-2 record, losing only to the Gondoliers. The City playoffs begin tonight, with Palisades scheduled to host a lower-seeded team in the Pali gym at 7 p.m. (The seeding meeting was held after the sports section went to press.) Second round games will be played Monday, November 7. Jenna McCallister led Pali against Venice with 12 kills and six blocks, Alex Lunder had 12 kills and Teal Johnson added 10. Senior Megan Chanin let the team with six serving aces. “It was so frustrating,” senior Kaylie McCallister said. “We could’ve beaten them, but we just couldn’t finish the game, couldn’t get the momentum we needed.” Although three of Venice’s starters are seniors, Palisades Head Coach Matt Shubin doesn’t think it gave Venice an edge. “We have a big group of sophomores who are mature beyond their years,” he said. “Athletically we are on par with Venice.” Shubin, a former volleyball player for UCLA, came on as the Dolphin coach just before the season’s first game. “Our biggest problem has been our late start as a team,” he said. “Most of the other teams had six weeks more practice together than we did.” “He’s a really good offense coach,” Kaylie McCallister said about Shubin. This senior has had four different coaches in her years at Pali. “If we keep playing together we can make it to championships,” she predicted. The Pali JV’s won their final match at Venice, beating the Gondoliers in three games. They ended their regular league season 9-1, losing only to Venice. Their coach, Kristin Mitchell, wasn’t hired until late in the season and coached her first game against Venice. She will take the team to the City tournament in Sylmar on Saturday.

Theater Review
Reviewed by BARRY BLITZER, Palisadian-Post Columnist She’s Sandra Tsing Loh, writer-performer and vivacious daughter of a Chinese father and German mother. She’s also a self-described former sane person who became a parent’which furnishes the humorous, if somewhat risqu’, rants delivered during her solo performance at the 24th Street Theater in downtown Los Angeles. This controversial celebrity first appeared on stage, emerging from a blazing, fiery backdrop that very possibly could be hell. Dressed in black tights and a sarong, Loh launched into a uninhibited dance which could best be described as either erotic, psychotic or, giving her the benefit of the doubt, a unique way to stay in shape. Things improved decidedly during the next 75 minutes; Loh frantically paced the stage, while telling about attempts to place their son in a recommended Van Nuys preschool environment with high test scores. Despite having lived in the area for years, there were countless stumbling blocks, the most irritating wait listing. Palisadian parents can easily relate to Loh’s desperate visits to parochial schools, then to progressive private ones with their tuitions ranging from $14,000 to $27,000. Or as she put it, “if your kid skipped sixth grade, you could feed an entire village in Rwanda.” According to her, rumors regarding a magnet school’s student achievement scores were traded by anxious young parents, like blind men groping for an elephant. Other desperate endeavors involved transferring to the highly rated Malibu school district, where her widower Chinese dad occupied an upscale townhouse; the downside was he didn’t invite the family to move in with him; he presumably was too busy driving along PCH flirting with female bicycle riders. Understandably, this made Sandra more frustrated than ever. Perhaps this could be one of the reasons for her well-publicized use of the F-word (that cost her a job on KCRW). She apparently survived and is currently heard on a competing station while also contributing to the Atlantic Monthly. Her performance also makes clever use of off-stage voices and humorous special effects. While vividly describing the hopes of parents like herself for their children’s future success in college, Ivy League banners swiftly unfurl from the ceiling: Yale, Harvard, Princeton’LEXUS! Incidentally, co-directors David Schweizer and Bart DeLorenzo should be acclaimed for their inventive staging. A word about the aforementioned 24th Street Theater that’s merely a hop, skip and jump from USC. The theater itself is old and comparable to Hollywood’s “Off Broadway” showcases; however it’s air conditioned and the 99 seats all have good sight lines and, better yet, there’s plenty of leg room. There’s free and secured parking directly opposite the theater, too. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 3 and 7 p.m. Most of the shows have been sold out, which is why “Mother On Fire” has been extended indefinitely. You’ll laugh, you’ll cringe, and more than likely advise friends and relatives not to miss seeing this multi-talented, provocative solo performer’that is, before she’s confined. Geffen Traveling Theater Troupe Performs at Pali Elementary
“Fondue, fondue, there’s a rat heaven waiting for me and for you,” was one of the refrains that stayed with this theatergoer after seeing a clever, funny and entertaining production of “The Pied Piper of Hamlin” at Palisades Elementary last Tuesday. The Geffen Traveling Theater Troupe’s Parson’s Nose Productions performed to a delighted group of third, fourth and fifth graders. In the original “Pied Piper” story, based on a 13th-century tale, the Hamlin community is overrun with rats. A person is hired to rid the town of its vermin. When the town refuses to pay the fee, the Pied Piper lures the children away by piping’the same method that he’s used on the rats. The story is thoroughly updated, complete with puppets, show tunes and audience interaction. The narrator, a rat in a trench coat, sets the scene by telling the audience that the town is deserted, but that it wasn’t always; a long time ago, things were much different. The music begins and the happy townspeople come out singing the opening number. Two couples are introduced: the Butzes and the Klutzes, who pride themselves on their cheese. As a matter of fact, both couples are so intent on their business and the money they’ve earned, which allows them to buy all the possessions they want, they’re not even sure of their own children’s names. The Klutzes and Butzes decide that the way to keep their empires growing is to build a cheese emporium on the ground where their children play. The children argue, but the parents dismiss them because, after all, “You children don’t need a place to play,” and “We’ve given you all the toys and nannies a child could want.” The children find a woman piper who will rid the town of the rats for money and a promise that both parents will spend more time with their children. The Klutzes and Butzes agree and the version ends in much the same fashion as the original story. One of the funniest scenes in the play evolves after the song “They think their cheese don’t stink.” The couples start fighting, throwing cheese foam pieces, and it escalates to a fight with pool noodles, kickboards and Viking helmets. This Geffen production was total enjoyment, and the message that children are the future was crystal clear. Having sat through too many children’s shows to count, I was pleased to find children’s live entertainment that was thoughtful, fun and well-performed’not a thinly disguised message. Lance Davis, who was also one of the performers, wrote the lyrics and music, and adapted the original script. The show’s director Michael Faulker arranged and recorded the music. All of the cast had excellent singing voices and the individual performances were well done. After the school performance, the children were allowed the ask the actors questions. One child wanted to know why the mayor wore a cheese hat and where he got it. The actor explained he was “the big cheese” and that the costume designer ordered the hat from Wisconsin. One child asked why they fought with pool noodles. The actor answered that the difference between theater and film is that in theater they use metaphors: they take one thing and use it for something else. In this case the noodles were a metaphor for weapons. In addition to touring schools, the Geffen Theater has Saturday plays for children called the Saturday Scene. All of the shows are child-friendly in length, lasting about an hour. If “The Pied Piper” is any indication of the quality of Parson’s Nose Productions’ shows, they are certainly a must for parents who want their children to experience live theater. “The Pied Piper” runs November 5 and 12 in Pasadena, and December 3,10 and 17 at the Geffen. A modestly priced subscription series is available and individual tickets can be purchased as well. Visit www.Geffenplayhouse.com to see the 18 family shows playing this year. The Pacific Palisades Junior Women’s Club will present its 20th Annual Holiday Home Tour on Sunday, November 13 when three distinctive private homes in the Palisades will be open for viewing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Holiday Boutique, taking place at the Palisades Recreation Center, 851 Alma Real, features 54 vendors selling holiday items, home accessories, clothing, jewelry and more. Returning this year is the Junior’s Estate Sale, with many great finds’from unusual antiques to modern pieces’all donated by members of the club. Monrose Catering will sell refreshments at the Boutique Caf’, and valet parking is available for a nominal fee. Tickets, $35 ($25 for seniors 60 years and older), are available for purchase online at www.PPJWC.com or by phone at 285-3218, as well as at each of the homes on the day of the tour. Pre-purchased tickets may be picked up on November 13 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Boutique. Shuttle service is mandatory for the Evans Road property; patrons may park at Will Rogers free of charge. Proceeds from the Home Tour and Holiday Boutique are awarded to local nonprofit organizations in Pacific Palisades. In the past five years, PPJWC has donated over $415,000 to various groups. The club invites all nonprofit groups serving the Palisades community to participate in our grant application program. For more information, visit www.PPJWC.com. 500 Toyopa The resident of this contemporary property is a spa owner who couldn’t stop bringing work home. Home tour visitors will experience 6,200 square feet of balance, peace and harmony, all achieved through Feng Shui and other principles. Trickling sounds from a pond create a tranquil mood in the front yard. Once in the foyer, the owners’ love of art and antiques becomes apparent. Clearly, the world is her marketplace. Walk down the front hallway noting the elegant comfort of the media room and the bamboo floors. A few steps more and tourgoers enter a world bursting with sensual color. The hand-finished paint on the living room walls evokes a warm, exotic mood. Elaborate silk pillows call out for travelers happy to recount their adventures. A trio of Moorish chandeliers light the evening and a wall of glass doors perfects the illusion of indoor/outdoor living. Across the lawn, the first floor guest room features an antique opium bed and several other Asian antiques. The lush linens of this room make even the weariest nomad feel at rest. Honed granite counters, Murano glass lighting and a blue glass back splash return the visitor to a contemporary feel in the kitchen. Doors lead outside to the exterior teak wood decks surrounded by a lush Asian-inspired landscape. Peer over the cascading waterfall for a peek at the swimming pool and spa below. Explore the second floor of the home and find two bedroom suites, a home spa complete with massage table and sauna, and the master suite where an outdoor canopy lounge sparks thoughts of an endless summer. Returning downstairs, take one last look at Nirvana in the Huntington. 14209 Evans Road Purchased from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger after he was elected, this sleeping beauty has awakened in her splendor. The 11,000-square-foot home and 2.5-acre property capture the dreams of any luxury fantasy with a hotel-like pool, spa, tennis court, gym, library, wine cellar, worker apartments and estate grounds complete with petting zoo. Passing through a tunnel of regal California oak trees, the city noise disappears and visitors hear only the creek below. The home, positioned across a bridge, sits behind massive wood and wrought iron gates. Inside the gates, the entry pavilion is paved with marble, reflecting the owners’ desire to restore this home to traditional grandeur. Stepping into the home, guests first see the formal living room where the eye-catching carpet, handwoven in India especially for this room, displays an intricate design. Art and artifacts abound throughout the home, all bounty from the owners’ many adventures abroad. The fully upholstered powder room is laced with 14-karat gold accents and a mirror made for the room in Murano, Italy. The wine cellar’s intricate iron door was handmade in Mexico. Upstairs, the master suite is defined by a striking, sunken, octagonal design surrounded by balconies. The floors of the balconies are part of the 6,000 square feet of marble used throughout the property. His and hers fully appointed bathrooms connect to the bedroom with his leading to an office overlooking the staircase, and hers to a grand bath with dual closets. Also on the second floor is the lady’s office just off the children’s wing. She can fax that last document to the East Coast while gazing at the duck pond, petting zoo and rambling lawn. Beyond the hand-painted children’s rooms, guest and nanny accommodations, the back staircase leads to a playroom and adjoining service apartment. Through the hallway, the gourmet kitchen includes china service storage for 200. As guests leave this home, they can look back and imagine the two-story glass gym and yoga studio to be constructed later this year. Evans Road brings wonderland to life. 17771 Calle de Palermo Nestled in a quiet guard-gated community in the Palisades Highlands, this Tuscan villa is the pinnacle of convenient modern living melded with Old World opulence. Occupying over 7,000 square feet of living space, the 21 rooms are hand-tooled down to the reproduction Louis XIV vent grills. Exotic woods are used throughout, from the solid mahogany library and billiard room to the Brazilian cherry floors and the distressed Italian ironwood. Venetian plaster gives the walls a marble finish that complements the imported stone and hand-painted tiles. Hidden within the antiqued walls are all the conveniences of modern living: a wireless Internet system, a 13-unit television network, surround sound and a security system. Entering through imposing distressed-cypress doors into a foyer with a magnificent stone staircase, visitors first note the Italian-glass lighting and an immense painting by Marco Ferrero of Eze, France, one of many paintings by this artist owned by the residents. Travertine columns line the formal dining room which faces the adjacent, rotunda living room. Continue up the grand staircase noting the unique iron appliqu’ across the ceiling. Proceed to the whimsical, design award-winning children’s bedrooms, guest suites, playroom, library and master suite. The master bedroom and bath are appointed with honed marble and detailed mosaic. The boudoir opens to a balcony overlooking the park-like grounds. Next, sneak down the back staircase to the gourmet kitchen, wine closet, breakfast area, family room and billiard room. No detail has been overlooked in this showcase home. Walking outside, one sees why this house is an entertainer’s delight with outdoor patio seating, televisions and heating. Partygoers often sit at the granite table/fire pit and or enjoy the outdoor bar and barbecue, pool, spa and sports court. The mountain vistas complete the owners’ bliss; a piece of heaven in the Highlands.
Author Celebrates Exuberance
What do Theodore Roosevelt and Snoopy have in common? The same thing that propelled John Muir, James Watson, J.M. Barrie, P.T. Barnum and Mary Poppins to act on their wildest dreams, according to psychologist Kay Redfield Jamison. In one word: exuberance. Jamison, a former Palisadian, is the author of a new book on the subject, “Exuberance: The Passion For Life,” which she will discuss at 3 p.m. on October 29 at the Palisades Branch Library, 861 Alma Real. Jamison defines exuberance as a psychological state characterized by high mood and high energy. To be exuberant, she says, is to possess a childlike curiosity and playfulness, the capacity to explore and create with irrepressible wonder and joy, and the desire to immerse oneself in adventure again and again. In her book, Jamison introduces readers to people, animals and fictional characters who are, or were inherently exuberant, and illustrates the critical role that exuberance plays in their lives and work. She includes herself in this eclectic group, along with several scientists she interviewed for the book, including elephant biologist Joyce Poole, and Robert Gallo, who discovered the first retrovirus and co-discovered the AIDS virus. “I delight in the company of these people,” Jamison said in a recent interview with the Palisadian-Post. She believes that exuberance is largely inherited but that it can also be environmentally determined. Jamison herself grew up in a stimulating environment’around her scientist father and his “ebullient” friends and colleagues who appreciated and nurtured her own exuberance. “Childhood tends to be an exuberant time,” said Jamison, a professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “But only about 10 percent of the population remains exuberant the rest of the time.” She explained that around puberty, children start to become less exuberant because they feel as though they have to move on, to mature and assume adult responsibilities. This is especially the case with females. “I have a lot of concern that young girls get it squashed out of them,” Jamison said. “They’re wildly enthusiastic about everything from running through trees to science, and then they feel at some point that they have to reign it in.” Exuberance “tends to be more manifest in males of the [human] species,” according to Jamison, a Palisades High School graduate who completed her doctorate at UCLA. She believes that exuberance is an essential temperament in both sexes, and that it plays an important role in creativity, scientific discovery, leadership and survival. However, while it increases one’s active engagement in the world and is crucial to social cohesiveness, it is also vulnerable to ridicule because exuberant people can be irritating, rash in their actions and difficult to take seriously. But the real danger, she maintains, is when exuberance is stifled. Jamison’s exuberance manifests itself in “almost everything: my intellectual work, clinical work and my friendships.” Part of what she so enjoyed about writing this book on exuberance was the people she was writing about, particularly Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley, a Vermont farmer who devoted his life to photographing snow crystals for their study and preservation. “I fell deeply in love with Bentley,” Jamison said. “He was so amazing; he made such beauty of life and had such passion for what he did.” Jamison’s decision to write a book on exuberance reflects a trend towards the study of positive emotions, which she says psychologists have started to take more seriously in recent years. “I’ve always been very interested in high mood states, more interested in mania than depression,” said Jamison, who herself suffered from manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder, which is characterized by extreme emotional highs and lows. Jamison told the story of her own affliction in “An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness” (1995), a book that went on to become a New York Times bestseller. She is also the author of “Touched with Fire: Manic Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament” and “Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide.” In “Exuberance,” Jamison explains the connection between manic-depressive illness and exuberance: “There are overlapping characteristics’high mood and expansive energy, among others’but there are critical distinctions as well. Exuberance is far from a pathological state for most who have it. It is, instead, a highly valued and integral part of who they are and how they meet the world.” Jamison said that when she was diagnosed with manic depression, she questioned what was related to mania and what was natural exuberance. “Mania is not exuberance,” she said. “It’s a psychotic, life-threatening illness, and is damaging to people who have it. Bipolar people who have mild mania aren’t particularly disabled by it, but severe mania is disabling. “I think that some people who have bipolar illness have an underlying exuberance. There’s a tendency to be worried that it’s too extreme.” Jamison emphasizes that it is important for our species to have a diversity of temperaments, and hopes her book with help people with bipolar disorder to feel more hopeful about their underlying exuberance. Exuberance, she said, is a source of resilience. Her late husband, neuropsychiatrist Richard Wyatt, died while she was writing this book, and his death “tried my level of exuberance, to say the least.” But “life comes back and you come back.”
