In its first real test of the season, the Palisades Charter High School softball team fell to Venice 4-1 on March 29 at Stadium by the Sea.
After the teams traded runs in the first inning, Briana Vasquez of Palisades and Sanai Smith of Venice settled into a pitcher’s duel.
Vasquez, who singled, doubled and scored the Dolphin’s only run, was stellar in the circle, tossing a three-hitter with nine strikeouts. Makena Reiss also had a hit and Stella Honda drew two walks.
Smith, meanwhile, hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the seventh inning and struck out 14 Dolphins as the defending Western League champion Gondoliers took sole possession of first place. Palisades, which opened the season with victories over LACES, Hamilton and University, dropped to 3-1.
The Dolphins return to action April 11 at Culver City.
