The Palisades High wrestling team, in just its second year as an organized sport at PaliHi, finished third out of 11 teams at regional finals on Saturday at Fremont High School. Three individual wrestlers won their weight classes: sophomore David Rheingold (113), sophomore Brad Boorstin (145) and senior Holland Herzfeld (197). Herzfeld was named tournament MVP after pinning two opponents in the first period and a third opponent in the second period. ‘We did everything we could to prepare them for this point in the season,’ head coach Randy Aguirre said. ‘They’re as healthy as they can be, and their conditioning is in top form right now. It’s on them to execute.’ The overall positive showing also included strong outings by freshman Kevin Rosen (3rd, 126), senior Jesse Rheingold (4th, 126), senior Nick Ewbank (3rd, 132), sophomore Kenny Jones (3rd, 220) and sophomore Eric Miranda (5th, 106). ‘They wrestled hard, and I really couldn’t have asked for a better effort,’ Aguirre said. In the regular season, PaliHi went 6-5 overall and 3-2 in Western League matches. This Saturday, the Dolphins will join familiar foes such as Fremont, Birmingham, Bell and El Camino Real at City finals, which begin at 10 a.m. at Roybal Learning Center. Aguirre feels strongly about his team’s chances despite the deep field and he hopes that several of his athletes will qualify for State finals, which take place the following Saturday in Bakersfield. Each weight class features a 16-man bracket, and PaliHi will have 11 of the 14 weight classes represented at City finals. Last year, the Dolphins had entries in only nine of the classes and during the regular season had to relinquish 30 points per meet.
