Tim Hyde was officially hired on January 21 as the new head varsity football coach at Palisades High, replacing Perry Jones, who resigned in December. Hyde takes over a program that went 6-5 last season but included a 62-22 loss to Dorsey in the first round of the City Section playoffs. Last season, Hyde, 41, was the defensive coordinator at Crespi High, which thrashed PaliHi on September 14, 70-8. Crespi finished the season 8-2. Prior to his one year at Crespi, Hyde worked extensively in both the college and high school ranks, including the previous two years as defensive coordinator at Ventura College under Jon Mack. During his stint there, Hyde’s defenses set school sack records. A graduate of Redondo High School, Hyde was a team captain and all-league selection in high school as a 6’0′, 215-pound nose guard. After high school, he enlisted in the Marines, then began his coaching career. ‘Everywhere I’ve coached has gotten me to this point as far as being a head football coach,’ Hyde said. ‘This opportunity really excited me because the Palisades area, the people and the community really interested me. I wasn’t going to leave Crespi for just any job. I wanted to join a place where I could have success.’ Though it is too early to make any decisions on philosophies and schemes, Hyde emphasized that his approach will be to make the adjustments necessary to be successful. ‘Every coach is different,’ Hyde said, adding that he will definitely not be running the wishbone offense. ‘Every coach does what he knows. That’s what coaching is. I’m a completely different coach than Jones. I will run an offense and defense that will work in the fourth quarter and win games.’ Hyde said that he feels confident that he will be able to throw the ball consistently with his two quarterbacks, senior Taylor Mensik and sophomore P.J. Hurst, who moves up from the junior varsity squad.
