Senior residents of Pacific Palisades gathered at Palisades Branch Library on Monday, May 21, for an informative program entitled “Getting Around: Transportation Options for Seniors in Pacific Palisades.” The event was lead by Steve Lants, transportation director for the South Bay Cities Council of Governments.
Among the options discussed was the use of Access Services, a shared-ride transportation agency for community members with disabilities. It operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day in Los Angeles. Eligibility can be determined by filling out a form on the Access Services website.
LA CityRide offers transportation at a reduced cost for disabled seniors and those over the age of 65. Eligibility applications are available on the Los Angeles Department of Transit website.
Similarly, LA Metro offers monthly passes, discounted peak fares and disabled passes for senior travel. And finally, the Santa Monica Big Blue Buses. These are literally blue buses that offer affordable fares for seniors, the disabled and those on Medicare. They run on renewable natural gas and have won many sustainability awards.
Popular ride sharing services such as Uber and Lyft were also discussed.
Palisades Alliance for Seniors offers a rigorous program schedule to prepare seniors for a healthy and safe future. Next on the agenda is “Living with Low Vision: Solutions and Services” on June 11.
