Palisadian Anthony Hopkins—a former honorary mayor—takes on a starring role in “The Son,” set to release nationwide on Friday, January 20.
A film by Oscar-winning director and French playwright Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton, “The Son” was described as a “cautionary tale” that follows a family struggling to reunite after “falling apart.”
“‘The Son’ centers on Peter, whose hectic life with his infant and new partner Beth is upended when his ex-wife Kate appears at his door to discuss their son … who is now a teenager,” according to the film’s synopsis. “The young man has been missing school for months and is deeply troubled … By reaching for the past to correct its mistakes, [Peter] loses sight of how to hold onto [his son] in the present.”
In 2020, Zeller adapted his play “The Father” into a film, which starred Hopkins alongside Olivia Colman. “The Father” went on to receive six Oscar nominations, landing Hopkins an Oscar for Best Actor in 2021.
Hopkins reprises his role as Peter’s father, Anthony Miller, in “The Son.” Hopkins stars alongside Hugh Jackman, former Palisadian Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby and Zen McGrath.
The film is an adaptation of Zeller’s 2018 play, “Le Fils,” which translates to “the son.”
Zeller spoke with Newsweek in November 2022 about working with Hopkins again.
“I wrote the script with Anthony in mind, and to be honest, when I finished the script, he’s the first one I sent the script to and he read it right away,” Zeller said. “I really wanted to do it with him because to make a film is really like a sentimental experience … We did ‘The Father’ together and it was like something very special for both of us.”
Sony Pictures will release “The Son” in theaters. The film is rated PG-13 for mature content involving suicide and strong language, with a runtime of two hours and three minutes.
