Longtime Palisadian Wendy Fierstein recently submitted a poem with a note that
“it reflects the times we are all experiencing at the moment.”
PANDEMIC 2020
We were sent a plague to knock on our door,
Wake up! or this virus will soar.
So what have we done to deserve this and more,
Just look at the streets they are full of the poor.
Mother Earth is hurting she’s even cried out,
But we aren’t listening she may have to shout.
Showing kindness is too often rare,
The 1% just don’t want to share.
Wealth and power is the name of their game,
They could do so much good oh what a shame.
We gossip and judge our neighbors and friend,
Only good thoughts is what we should send.
Big Pharma is high on the list,
“Do no harm” they seemed to have missed.
Not for people but for profit is their aim,
We have been blind and paid just the same.
Tobacco companies are the same,
Addicted children they are to blame.
This is just to name a few,
What about all the hurt you knew.
But since Covid-19 have you noticed a shift?
People of all kinds looking to uplift.
Doctors, nurses and cleaners have answered the call,
Tending the sick and giving their all.
Grocery workers and cashiers risking their lives,
So that we won’t go hungry and buy our chives.
First responders are on the front line,
Amazing souls to us they shine.
Courageous sanitation keeps our public space clean,
Brave janitors give public bathrooms a sheen.
So what can you and I do
To fill the other shoe?
Show appreciation to all the folk
Who showed so much courage and the hope they invoke.
Smile at your neighbor across the street,
Lend a helping hand to the poor you meet.
Thank God every day that you are alive,
To be better in the future promise to strive
Share what you have with all your heart,
Love and kindness you’ll be doing your part.
Keep the faith and give out hope,
Stay at home and pray like the Rebbe and Pope,
I send all my love to all of you,
Stay safe just as I will too
Spread light and darkness will fade,
Seek and you shall find safety in God’s shade
