Palisadians Mechal Green and Adelle Levi performed liked champions on the soccer pitch at the Maccabiah Games in Israel, leading their respective USA teams to medals in the premiere sporting event for Jewish youth worldwide, with teams from 80 countries participating in 40 sports.
Green, who led Paul Revere Middle School to the Delphic League title in the winter and starts her freshman year at Palisades High in the fall, scored in the 38th minute of a 10-0 win versus Argentina. Her 16-and-under team went 3-0 in group play, outscoring Argentina, The Netherlands and Brazil, 16-1. In the semifinals Team USA edged Canada 2-1 and in the final on July 24, the Americans blanked The Netherlands 2-0 on goals by Hadley Pustilnik and Alexa Minestrella capture the gold medal.
Levi, a senior-to-be at Marymount High, led the USA’s 18-and-under team to victories over Australia (5-0), Mexico (5-0), Israel (2-1), Great Britain (4-0), Canada (1-0) and Argentina (5-0) with stellar play at her left wing back position. Team USA settled for the silver medal after a 1-0 finals loss to Israel. Games were played at the Olympic Village in Haifa.
Meanwhile, in the boys tennis competition, Adelle’s younger brother Braun reached the quarterfinals of the U16 singles division after winning his group with only two games lost. Levi is a sophomore at Loyola High, where he helped the Cubs reach the Southern Section Division I team finals as a freshman and advanced to the round of 16 of the Individual Doubles draw with partner Darren Ignatius.
