Pacific Palisades residents woke up to a traffic nightmare last Thursday after an early-morning landslide on Pacific Coast Highway closed northbound lanes of PCH from Temescal Canyon Road to Sunset Boulevard. This forced northbound traffic to work its way slowly through town along Sunset.
The incident was reported at 4 a.m. and occurred south of the Tahitian Terrace mobile-home-park driveway. According to various reports, the slide occurred after a leaky backyard garden hose saturated the soil. Further complicating matters, a tall evergreen on the property threatened to collapse and damage power lines before sliding onto PCH, said Patrick Chandler, a media relations officer for Caltrans.
PCH remained closed until 3 p.m. as crews removed the tree and debris, Chander said. The tree stump was left in place to help stabilize the hillside. Caltrans crews also installed 20,000-pound concrete barriers to prevent any further debris from falling onto the highway.
