The Palisadian-Post has partnered with Paul Revere Charter Middle School to highlight a series of pieces from its 2021 Literary Anthology. The following piece, penned by Brooke Santos, originally appeared in the Tribute Poems section of the anthology, released in spring, and has been reprinted here with permission.
The loud splash of supple, sweet water as it flows
down rugged rocks
The faint swish of a tongue so parched, belonging
to a lingering fox
The lost breeze dipping through the water and
blowing a lone leaf
The vague voice of Mother Nature as it hides in
the shadows of The Creek
The occasional steps and pitter patter from the
teens who come for a quick swim,
The rare plop of a fishing rod being cast onto the
water’s brim,
The silence from those who are too angered to
speak and
The hums of those who enjoy the company of The
Creek
A sunny summer and a warm winter spell,
Compels animals to leave this arroyo and bid
farewell,
The Creek awaits a lush bath to cleanse and
replenish itself,
Waiting for a glorious rainfall to fulfill its wealth
When the time comes for The Creek to thrive,
Is when this dormant safe haven can come alive
