The Palisadian-Post has partnered with Paul Revere Charter Middle School to highlight a series of pieces from its 2021 Literary Anthology. The following piece, penned by Gabriel Robley, originally appeared in the Narratives Prose section of the anthology, released in spring, and has been reprinted here with permission.
It was a crisp November morning, the sun was shining, and the birds were singing. My family and I were about to make our annual trip to Big Bear, where we celebrate Thanksgiving with some of our friends. It takes us about three or four hours to get to Big Bear, but it is totally worth it.
Finally, when we arrive at our cabin, and the frozen winter air enters my lungs, I have to quickly put on a jacket and some boots, and begin to play in the freshly fallen snow. When I get cold, I enter the doorway, and immediately the hot air hits me like a bat to the face. I start dripping like a wet dog as the snow melts off my jacket and falls to the floor.
After that, we head to Thanksgiving dinner at our friend’s house. We laugh, talk and eat until we are full, and then we all go home and watch the new snow fall, as the sounds of the wind lull us gently to sleep.
