When the final whistle shrilled and last Friday afternoon’s Delphic League A Division girls soccer final was over, Paul Revere Middle School players gathered along the sideline to congratulate one another and thank coach Mele French on piloting their repeat.
For co-captains Mechal Green and Ava Loos, who as 6th-graders helped Revere win the title for the first time two winters ago, defending it with a 1-0 triumph over Harvard-Westlake was even better.
“It was harder because we’re a little rusty and there were better teams this year,” said Green, who scored the only goal midway through the second half on a cross that deflected into the goal off of a defender. “Our coach said at halftime to channel all of our nervousness into excitement and we did.”
Green plays club for Beach FC in the South Bay and will compete in the Maccabi Games with fellow Palisadian Adelle Levi in the summer. She lives near Marquez Elementary and will attend Palisades High next year. Green scored in a 2-0 win at Marlborough in the finals two years prior when Revere went undefeated. The 2021 season was canceled due to the pandemic
Winger Grace Behar, who lives in the Village and plays for AYSO United, said she learned from an earlier tie with Harvard-Westlake and center back Alina Evans, who lives in Castellemmare and plays club for the LA Breakers, pointed to teamwork as the difference.
“Defending it was harder,” Loos said. “We had to do it! As captain, you have more responsibility, but I like having higher expectations.”
Other Palisadians on Revere’s A team were Ingrid Knap, Gabriella Bartle, Abigail Hanelin and goalie Annabelle Refnes. Rounding out the roster are Kira Chang, Harper Given, Nyla Grey, Isabella Jones, Sibley Norris and Ava Serrano.
“That we’ve won it twice now as the only public school in a private school league speaks to the dedication of these girls,” French said. “We don’t have the best facilities or field, but they never complain.”
That same day Revere’s boys A team battled Chaminade in the finals in West Hills in a contest that was tied after regulation and overtime. In the 10th round of a penalty kick shootout, goalie Smithson Sorrick made a save and Gabriel Badener netted the winner. Also on Coach Kelly Parker’s squad are Sasha Amiri, Rostin Borna, Zachary Cohen, Yoni Feldman, Soren Keltner, Jack Kurland, Ismael Moghnie, Darian Nourparvar, Miles Ozar, Alexandros Psounis, Jackson Richmond, Carter Schwartz, Gideon Shipper, Calder Silverton, Liam Stauber and Kamran Yashouafar. Revere’s JV boys team also won the league title.
