Scarlett’s Cupcakes will host the monthly Chamber of Commerce mixer on Thursday, April 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 857 Via de la Paz.
The public is invited to enjoy sweets such as cherry pie, cakes, cupcakes and lemon and chocolate chip bars, and coffee.
There will also appetizers, such as chips and salsa, chicken skewers and taquitos donated by Kay ‘N Dave’s, and wine. There will be drawings for gifts donated by Chamber members. Admission for non-members is $25.
Scarlett’s owner Susan Payne Wilson and husband Andrew opened the shop on December 24, 2010. In addition to cupcake varieties such as Ruby’s red velvet, choco pearls, black/white, choco/peanut butter and Boston cream, Wilson also makes pies, muffins, French macarons, banana pudding and custom cakes.
Additionally, the store offers curbside service, early-bird pick-up, free delivery ($36 minimum order) and cupcake-baking and -decorating parties for up to 10 participants.
Wilson said that her mom taught her to cook. “I learned to bake when I was tall enough to reach the kitchen counter,” she said, noting that many of the cakes featured at Scarlett’s are from family recipes, many of which she has now adapted for those on a gluten-free diet.
After graduating from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), Wilson’s first career was in retail clothing. She worked as a buyer, which is where she met Andrew, her husband of 20 years, who was a seller. They moved from New York to California in 1990.
Wilson started working for Robinson’s, but when the May Company acquired the company, they let most of the Robinson’s employees go, which is when Wilson and her husband started a second career as residential realtors with the RE/MAX Agency in Marina del Rey.
The Wilsons moved to the Marquez Knolls area six years ago; Andrew still works as a realtor. “This community is such a great place,” Wilson said.
